New Year Newsletter 2015 - Friday 26th December 2014

Recent months have seen the closure of the Winton Bookshop - the last 'proper' antiquarian and second-hand bookshop in Bournemouth. In spite of the unfavourable trading conditions, we are determined to continue to serve the local community at Southbourne, providing friendship and support for our team of volunteers (the St. Martin's 'family') as well as the many lonely and elderly folk who live nearby.

The shop re-opens after the Christmas holiday at 10 a.m. on Tuesday 6th January 2015.

We wish all our customers and friends a happy and peaceful New Year and we look forward to welcoming you in 2015.

New Year Greetings 2014 - Tuesday 31st December 2013

Happy New Year to all our friends and supporters from the St. Martin's team.

2013 was a difficult year for the second-hand book trade. Bournemouth once had about a dozen thriving second-hand bookshops; there are now just two or three, including St. Martin's. Nevertheless, we are committed to maintaining our support for local causes, including Michael House, the Bournemouth hostel for the homeless.

St. Martin's is the only charity bookshop in Bournemouth entirely run by volunteers.

Many thanks to my friend, the Revd. Andrew Parker, minister to Stalybridge Unitarian Church, for joining our book drive from his home in Manchester.

David

Revised opening hours - Wednesday 25th December 2013

For a trial period we are remaining open later (to 5 p.m.) on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays as noted on the 'About Us' page. This is subject to availability of volunteers, so we suggest that you telephone 01202 419119 before coming to the shop to avoid a wasted journey.

Check this website for updates on our business hours. David

Christmas holiday arrangements 2013 - Monday 23rd December 2013

Weather and staff availablity permitting, the bookshop will be open on Christmas Eve, Tuesday 24th December, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. But please telephone 01202 419119 before coming, in case the weather makes this impossible.

We will then be closed until 10 a.m. on Thursday 2nd January, 2014, enabling our hardworking team of volunteers to enjoy a well-deserved rest.

We thank them and our loyal friends and customers for their support during 2013 and we look forward to welcoming you at the shop in the New Year.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and every blessing in 2014.

David - on behalf of the Trustees

Death of Tony Harrington, M.B.E. - Wednesday 23rd January 2013

It is with great regret that I report the death of Tony Harrington at the Macmillan Unit, Christchurch Hospital, on 8th January 2013. Tony was one of our founding trustees in 1997 and was an active supporter of many charities, including Michael's Limited, Kabanana Care and the Charles Rolls Memorial Project. Donations in Tony's memory for 'Macmillan Caring Locally' may be sent to Brian Wilton Funeral Home, 156 Tuckton Road, Southbourne, Bournemouth, BH6 3JX. Our deepest sympathy goes to his widow, Joan, and their family. David.

Newsletter April 2012 - Monday 23rd April 2012

Friday 20th April saw 20 members and friends gather for an excellent lunch at the 'Beach Hut' Cafe at Southbourne Cross-roads. A collection was held which raised 125 for Michael's Limited (the charity for the homeless which we have supported continuously since our charity was set up). Although trading has been difficult, we are committed to maintaining our support for Michael's at a time when all charities are struggling to meet the demands made on their resources.

Sad News: death of former trustee Brendon O'Hare - Friday 4th March 2011

It is with deep regret that I have to report the death of a former trustee of our charity - Mr Brendon O'Hare in a Bournemouth Nursing Home at the age of 92. The requiem mass took place yesterday (3rd March 2011) at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Douglas Road, Southbourne, Bournemouth.

Brendon had a distinguished and interesting career in the services, including wartime service in the Air Force, followed by thirty years service in the Army. He was an entertaining colleague who gave generously of his time to serve as a volunteer in our shop and whose counsel as a trustee was greatly valued.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his family.

David

Review of 2010 - Friday 17th December 2010

During 2010 St. Martin's was able to provide a limited number of grants to individuals with disabilities and other health problems. Unfortunately, the recession has affected our income, which comes from sales at our bookshop.

We have an on-going commitment to those charities - such as Michael House - who look to us for support during these difficult times and we intend to honour this commitment. Regrettably, this means that we are unable, at present, to make grants to individuals.

David

Ordering from the catalogue - Sunday 9th August 2009

We are in the process of adding titles to the on-line catalogue. The process is painfully slow and we are bound to encounter gremlins on the way, so apologies if you find the process frustrating. If you wish to place an order, please telephone me on 01202 547054 or e-mail: davidj.ayton@ntlworld.com or davidayton@btconnect.com to check that the item is still available. Please note that prices quoted do not include postage. If a book shows a price of '0.00' this means that the book has been sold. Do please send your wants lists.
Congratulations to the Revd. Austin Fitzpatrick for being our very first 'on-line' customer!
We look forward to hearing from customers new and old. Have a wonderful summer! David
